Handel Choir Auditions
The Handel Choir is an auditioned ensemble of 45 singers rehearsing on Monday evenings September through May. We perform choral orchestral music with guest professional vocal soloists and a period instrument orchestra as appropriate. Our repertory is wide ranging, including baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary music. The Chandos Singers is a 12-16 voice chamber chorus drawn from the larger choir. Auditions are by appointment throughout the year.
What should I expect in an audition?
Singers audition individually with the Artistic Director. Singers should prepare a song or aria that effectively demonstrates their vocal and musical abilities. Singers will also be asked to vocalize and sight-read. Prior instrumental and/or vocal solo or ensemble experience is recommended and preferred.
Schedule
Handel Choir members participate in Monday rehearsals, Tuesday sectionals (two per concert period), and mandatory working and dress choral-orchestral rehearsals during the two weeks prior to a subscription concert. There are five subscription concert performances in 2008-2009 plus informal performances in the community.
When do rehearsals begin?
Rehearsals begin on the first Monday after Labor Day in September and, with the exception of the Christmas/New Year holidays, continue into May. Contact the Choir office for the year's calendar.
Additional responsibilities:
Members are asked to support the Choir through participation on committees and by working on special projects. Each member is strongly encouraged to support the Choir through publicizing concerts and events among friends, family and associates, and by purchasing and encouraging the sale of tickets for subscription concerts.
Dues, music, concert attire:
Choir members pay an annual fee of $165, and each member purchases his/her own music (at cost) and concert attire (long black for women, tuxedos for men). Need-based scholarships are available, please do not hesitate to ask.
